In an act bereft of leadership, Peter Corroon’s goodbye gift to Salt Lake County is a proposed 17.5% property tax increase. The proposal comes just days after voters in Salt Lake County approved a $47 million bond (Proposition 1) for parks and trails and chose Democrat Ben McAdams–who promised to “will hold the line on taxes”–to replace Corroon. Both would take effect in 2013.

While opponents of incorporation argue that becoming a city will put law enforcement in the community at risk, others see incorporation as a way to ensure that more police are patrolling the streets.

The other, Republican Mark Crockett, is a businessman with a law degree and career turning struggling companies into successful ventures. In what is shaping up to be one of Utah’s most watched elections this year, candidates for Salt Lake County mayor will meet in three debates this week and several more in the coming weeks.
Starting tonight on KCPW, Republican businessman Mark Crockett and Democratic Senator and political consultant Ben McAdams will debate why each should be chosen as mayor of Utah’s most populous county. This is not the first debate between the two, but it is the first broadcast during the prime time hours from 6 to 8 PM.
