J. Wong’s Asian Bistro: Priced for Value, Cooked to Taste

There aren’t a lot of restaurants in downtown Salt Lake where you can find good service, upscale food, and clean and attractive decor…for under $10.

J. Wong’s Asian Bistro on 200 South just one such place.

From the minute we pulled up (and got rock star parking directly in front of the building) to the smiling welcome we received as we opened the door to the smiling face that held the door as we left, the service was quick and cheerful.

The food didn’t lag too far behind, either. I ordered Kung Pao chicken and my associate took the General Tao chicken, both which came with rice and a soup. I order an egg drop soup and took ham fried rice with the meal.

The soup came hot and thick, with bits of egg mixed in with the fresh vegetables. As egg drop soups go, I liked it, even if it was a bit warm for the near 90 degree weather outside.

Kung Pao Chicken

The meal came quickly, and at less than $6, I can’t complain. The chicken was tender and spicy. The vegetables were fresh and crispy. The rice was moist mixed well with the Kung Pao. In all, the dish was attractive and enjoyable, if not quite feeling completely authentic.

I was gratified to see non-wood chopsticks come with the utensils, though I don’t remember if they were ceramic or just hard plastic. Either way, it was better for the mouth than worry about slivers from cheap wood ones.
