Candidates for Utah Republican Party Treasurer: Cameron Robinson [Contributor]

A candidate for Utah Republican Party Treasurer, Cameron Robinson is seeking election by the Utah State Republican Central Committee to replace former Treasurer Dave Crittenden. This is the first in a series of brief profiles on those who have filed to run for election to the spot. As information comes out, I will update the profiles here.

Utah Republican Party Treasurer Candidate Profile:

Cameron Robinson was one of two candidates who filed for election on the final day of eligibility. His primary strength in the race is his background in accounting. He has served as a Utah County Republican Party County Delegate.

Cameron is from Idaho and moved to Utah in 2000. He received his bachelors of accounting from the University of Utah and has worked as a CPA for the past 12 years. He was Controller for Frontgate Homes and Controller for Morris Murdock Travel. He is currently the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis for Young Family Living. His responsibilities include budgeting, planning, and forecasting finances cash flow. He lives in Eagle Mountain with his wife Holly and five children.

3 Questions:

Q: What are your thoughts on the caucus? Why should we keep it or move to a direct primary?

A: I love the caucus. I believe institutions like our neighborhood caucus meetings are exactly what the Founders envisioned when they set out to form the Republic. I’ve been attending caucus meetings for a while now, and I’ve watched in excitement as more and more of my neighbors have attended the last couple of years. We were so large last time we outgrew our school classroom and had to move to the middle school library. Standing in front of a packed crowd and answering my neighbors’ questions as I ran for county delegate was a thrill. We were all eager, respectful, and engaged in the political process.

Then, as I attended meeting after meeting between caucus night and convention Saturday I realized again what a great system we have. In my little Eagle Mountain we had statewide elected officials and their challengers come and speak and field questions asked by their constituents. I can’t imagine in too many other states people get to talk face to face with their governors and senators like we do. Utah has always been unique, and our caucus and convention system is another example of our uniqueness bringing out the best in us.

Q: What do you feel the most important duties of  the Utah Republican Party Treasurer? What qualifications do you have that make you feel like you are the right man for the job?

A: A treasurer has ultimate responsibility for the creation and reporting of timely financial data in accordance with correct accounting practices. The state party is entrusted with funds, and it’s the Treasurer’s stewardship to ensure they are accounted for correctly. With clean records the state party can answer confidently any financial question, whether from party officers or outside auditors. For a dozen years I have been employed as a professional accountant, preparing and maintaining financial statements, budgets, and forecasts. Every large firm engages outside auditors annually, and I have been the primary contact with auditors throughout my career.

Q: Chairman Evans has noted in a letter to state central committee members that he feels a technology background is important to the position. Do you feel that is the case? Why do you feel that way?

A: Programming is not a normal Accounting function. We do however use technology a lot. There’s accounting software, forecasting tools, reporting modules, etc. I’ve grown up in a professional world where IT is an integral part of what we do. I’ve bid out IT solutions, purchased them, and implemented them, and that is what I think this role should be.
