Utah Politicos React to Obama’s State of the Union Speech

Tonight was the annual State of the Union address, and President Obama did not disappoint.  To paraphrase a much better writer than myself:

It was the best of speeches, the worst of speeches, it was an account of wisdom,  it was a narrative of foolishness, it was a recitation of belief, it was a delivery of incredulity, it was a soliloquy of Light, it was a monologue of Darkness, it was the briefing on hope, it was the prophecy of despair, it had everything before it, it had nothing before it…in short, the State of the Union was so far like the everything it was predicted to be, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. It all depends what you were looking for when you watched it.

Since Utah tends to be slightly more conservative than not, you can imagine what the reactions were like from around here. Here are a few of them (and if you saw any good ones, link them in the comments below, and I’ll add them):

Our country deserves something other and better than the President’s politics of division. It’s time for all of us—Republicans and Democrats alike—to come together and unite behind an agenda that will move America forward.

The nation should be united in our global fight against terrorism, but the president hasn’t delivered on that. The president seems to think we are winning the war on terror, and there are those of us that would beg to differ.

Rep. Rob Bishop

The President had a chance to reach out and say he heard the American people in the last election, but he didn’t. Instead, he stuck with rhetoric and retreads that won’t help American families, won’t solve problems, and won’t pass Congress.  Fortunately, we have solutions that will help families and can pass Congress, and I look forward to working on those in the coming weeks.
