Bill Clinton’s not on the ballot, but a lot of Democrats wish he was. He represents better days, both for the party and for the country…and he could actually compromise with Republicans.
Instead we get…well, a lot dismal job reports. What can we expect from Obamaland tonight?
We left Salt Lake in the early hours of morning Sunday and after, changing planes in sunny Los Angeles, we descended through a cloudy layer and into Tampa Bay, Florida. Next week, the Republican National Convention will gather in Tampa Bay to formally nominate Mitt Romney for President and Paul Ryan as Vice President. In spite of hurricane Isaac, I’ll be there with KSL News Radio as their “Star Correspondent” for the week. We’ll be there to report back to Utah on the convention, to make sure you hear about what is happening, even if it doesn’t make the prime time broadcast.

This is a bird’s eye view of the race for the White House in the week before the Republican convention. Rasmussen find Romney up and Obama down, under-40 breaking for Romney, Newsweek turns on Obama while the Obama campaign fights internal strife, and Noonan asks: “If it had been a Republican vice presidential candidate who had made those gaffes…the subject today of the panel would be how stupid is this person, can this person possibly govern?”

Do Americans “dramatically underestimate” taxes? Not only do more than half of Americans believe they are overtaxed, it turns out that many of us don’t even realize that our employer pays more taxes on top of our payroll deductions. In other words, many Americans don’t realize that your employer is paying an extra price for every worker, money that might otherwise be spent wages, R&D, employee benefits, or investment. I’m just sayin’…
If where the “fair share” line is up to private opinion, what does it say about President Obama’s opinion that, when the economy is struggling and unemployment is high, he wants to take wealth out of our country to balance the debt? Wouldn’t it be better to grow the economy and lower the cost of government? Why would we soak the rich–most of them owners of businesses and investors in businesses–at the very time capital is most needed to grow business and expand? [cont…]
The state of the debate, says the Economist, is poor, though. On the right, taxes can never balance the deficit (even though the Economist cites Milton Friedman just a sentence before) and expansive spending is justified for prisons, national security, and big business subsidies. On the left, reform is impossible, with Obama methodically “unpicking welfare reform” passed over the last twenty years, including under President Clinton’s administration. Further, “Mr Obama seems to think the public sector is inherently more moral than the private one. Companies are at best cows to be milked, at worst prey to be hunted.” [cont…]
