David Clark Announces for 2nd Congressional, & Lowry Snow Replaces Him in the State House. [Press Announcement]

A friend of mine on the Clark for Congress campaign forwarded to me David Clark’s campaign announcement (at bottom). I’m willing to post announcements for anyone who asks, within reason and some editorial discretion, in the interest of informing the public.

If you’ll recall, Dave Clark is a former speaker of the Utah House of Representatives and announced his resignation from that body earlier this year.

As a state lawmaker, [Dave] Clark said he wasn’t afraid to make the tough, “gut-wrenching” decisions required when state revenues plunged 20 percent. And if elected to Congress, he said he would work to reform entitlements, balance the budget — he supports a balanced budget constitutional amendment — reform the tax code by making it fairer and flatter and reducing the size of government.Yesterday, the Salt Lake Tribune carried the story about his announcement in St. George. “Some 70 supporter gathered to cheer on the Santa Clara banker at the Dixie Center,” says Robert Gehrke, for the Tribune.

“Some say we [as a country] are in decline, but this is wrong,” said Clark. “Don’t fear America’s future. We know how to turn up the flame.”

Gehrke also noted that Clark is joining a crowded field in the race for the Second Congressional District.

He joins a long line of candidates seeking the 2nd District seat: Cherilyn Eagar, Chris Stewart, Howard Wallack, John Willoughby and Chuck Williams. The seat is currently held by Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson, who has declared his intent to run for the newly created 4th Congressional District, centered mainly in Salt Lake County.

In case you didn’t catch that, yes, Matheson has decided to skip out of running for reelection in the Second Congressional District, where he lives, and instead to carpet-bag the Fourth Congressional District. Catch Lee Davidson’s story about that in yesterday’s Salt Lake Tribune.

With Clark’s resignation from the House, delegates have chosen V. Lowry Snow as Clark’s replacement at the Utah House of Representatives. Snow is an attorney and businessman, a founding partner of the St. George firm of Snow Jensen & Reece, and has served on state and Washington County economic boards. He is currently chairman of the Utah Judicial Performance Evaluation Commission, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. He is also a former president of the Utah Bar Association, which honored Snow with a lifetime service award at the Utah Bar Association’s Fall Forum.
