Candidates for Utah Attorney General: Michelle Mumford

Utah Attorney General, Michelle Mumford[Updated 2:30 PM 12-11-2013]: Added American Lands Council 2013 Questionnaire Attorney General Candidates Transfer of Public Lands Responses by Michelle Mumford (embedded below).

A candidate for Utah Attorney General, Michelle Mumford is seeking appointment by Governor Gary Herbert to replace former Utah Attorney General John Swallow, who resigned December 3. This is the sixth in a series of brief profiles on those who  have filed to run for one of three Republican nominations to Governor Gary Herbert’s for appointment the spot. As information on each individual comes out, I’ll update the profiles here.

Although a surprise to some when she entered the race for Utah Attorney General, Michelle Mumford has quickly become a contender. Well known by the members of the Republican State Central Committee, Mumford is currently Secretary to the state party and comes to the race with a broad range of legal experience and a ready constituency.

A graduate from J. Reuben Clark Law School (cum laude), during law school Mumford worked as a clerk for the Office of Legislative Research and General Counsel and as a full-time intern for the United States Attorney, District of New Jersey. After law school she worked on Wall Street as an associate at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy in New York City where she received the Distinguished Award for Pro Bono Service after her work with disabled students in the state education system as well as her experience with the 9/11 World Trade Center Death Certificate project. Her legal practice focused on complex civil RICO claims, stockholder derivative actions, contract claims, and appellate work.

Moving to Utah, Michelle accepted a position as a clerk  for Judge Monroe G. McKay of the Tenth Circuit, and then as a staff attorney for the Tenth Circuit, working with multiple 3-judge panels to research and draft opinions.

Michelle is currently an Assistant Dean at Brigham Young University’s J. Reuben Clark Law School, in charge of Admissions.
